Every summer, something remarkable happens. A group of volunteers from Connecticut packs up, heads south, and gets to work fixing leaking roofs, patching crumbling floors, and replacing doors that no longer keep out the cold. Friends of Appalachia, Inc. is the organization behind those trips, a Trumbull-based nonprofit that has been connecting local volunteers with families in Central Appalachia who need safe, livable homes.
The work is hands-on and real. Volunteers from youth groups, college programs, and adult teams travel to some of the most economically distressed communities in America to serve alongside the Appalachia Service Project. No experience is required, only a willingness to show up and do something that matters.
Back home in Connecticut, the mission keeps going. Fundraising events and merchandise sales keep the program funded and the trips possible. This is not a faceless charity, it is a community of people who believe that a decent home is something every family deserves, and who are willing to do something about it.
